Hi, guys!!

The graphics in the sneak peak of SSMS 2 is stunning!! I wanted to ask you, how is the SSMS 2 coming along? It's getting interesting!!

                        Cheers,

Still in Alpha stage, progress as planned.

I cant say I am all that impressed by the alpha graphics - the trees look a bit lame. But there is a way to go of course yet I'm sure the graphics will look great eventually.

I would definitely like to see better shadows on orbiting objects in SS2. I find the objects in orbit in the present game look a bit too bright with a distinct lack of contrast (same for the objects on earth like the towers etc actually). Whereas its true that sometimes orbiting objects dont have completely black shadows due partially to the earths reflection, most photos I have seen of the shuttle etc in orbit do look very black in shadow and its something that I do find a bit unrealistic in the present game. I would certainly like to see this improved as the in orbit views are the main reason I bought the game. Its a small point admittedly but as the new game seems to be concentrating on graphical improvements I thought it worth saying.

I am sure, that photos does not help to define the brightness of the shadowed part of orbiting objects. It would be interesting so have reports from astronauts, that have already seen this with their own eyes.
The human eye is very adaptive to brightness differences. More than most cameras.
The game "simulates" the naked eye in most views, so it would be best to follow advice from real astronauts.

Nats: we are concentrating on ALL departments, not only graphics. The sneak previews show only a tiny part of what we have planned.

Poci & Nats: shadow "color" depends on zillion  of things, among  them the anount of ambient light and reflection from surrounding objects, transparency and color of the objects casting the shadow, etc. etc. I don't think we can ever match reality with the current technology (in real time), so basically we'll be looking at many compromises.

Regardless, the realism will benefit from self-shadowing even if we use some good approximation.

Hi, guys!!

I wanted to ask you, I'm very interested in finding out more about the new features of the SSMS 2. Will there be any working circuit breakers like what you see on the overhead panel which is used for turning stuff on and off? Will there be any new sounds like APU sound, and the wind sound when the space shuttle is ascending into thinner air and into space? The atmospheric rendering is good in SSM2007 but the atmospheric rendering will be better in SSMS 2. I'm sure the SSMS 2 will have more features than what I asked about here.

Yes sorry I shouldnt have said you were concentrating on only the graphics as I am sure there is quite a lot you will be adding in addition. Good to see though that improvements in the in orbit graphics are on the table. Being unable to ever get up there myself I would love this new sim to get me there in all but reality, the present sim doesnt quite do it for me, albeit being very impressive. Sun glinting off metal and windows, seeing the earths reflection in polished metal and glass, seeing the earths clouds and their shadows moving over the earth realistically and perhaps hurricanes and storms affecting lift offs and being where they were in reality, seeing the earths seasons change the globe - all this would add so much to the in orbit views, would love to see these kind of things in the game. For me it isnt so much pushing the buttons and doing the missions, the views from space are what I play the game for as much as anything else.

Hmm, I'm confused. Previously you hoped that we don't concentrate only on the graphics part, and now you're saying that this is the most important thing for you  ::)

Anyway, our work is not done yet - by far. Standby for other sneak peeks - when they come.

Important to me but definitely not the most important thing for me, graphics are just one aspect of a game. Fun gameplay, enjoyable graphics, addictiveness, immersion, realism, ease of learning, are all very important to me in a game. Needless to say I dont play many games these days. Last games that had all of this for me were Frontier Elite and EF2000. Developers these days seem to concentrate on difficulty, complexity and graphics to the detriment of everything else unfortunately. Playing a very difficult game puts me off more than anything else. I feel SSMS1 falls down a bit here. I am not quite finished with it yet but certainly it strains my willingness to keep on playing on occasion :-) Shame becuase its a great game otherwise. Hope the new game will have the opportunity to just cheat you way through an impossible move for those of us who arent qualified astronauts.

EF2000!!! Awesomeness!

But seriously, cheating our way through? That would affect realism quite a lot, which is -as you point out - an important aspect of a simulation (or game). I think there are enough aids in the current game, with access to all kinds of arrows and spheres pointing out exactly where we need to be. All these can make our life on orbit quite easy already.
If we want to wander mindlessly through all the complexity that comes with spaceflight and the space shuttle, then why do we even bother to play this simulator?

Not sure if anyone can answer this for me, But I do have a question about SSM2. I read that SSM2 is going to have the same mission and new ones, with graphic enhancments, and a few supprises. My question is why make a whole new version, when an expansion pack, could do all that, Instead of making a whole new version. Not sure why the new version, instead of an expansion pack. Just courious, not sure if a new engine was used or prehaps the developers bought new development software that would allow for greater emersion in to the sim. I was just courious, it just hit me the other day when I've seen others do this. I thought this was an interesting question to ask. Your Friend as always, Conan.

BTW you know the old 80's rock song, "I want my MTV" , well since the annoucment of SSM2. I've been singing " I want my SSM2" hehe, thought ya'll might get a kick out of that.

Short answers:

1. We haven't announced all the new features yet
2. SSMS2 cannot be an "expansion pack" of SSMS1 for the same reasons FSX could not be an expansion pack of FS9

Are there any estimates for us as to when SSM2 will likely to be released?  And, have you still got a lot of work on the tables from a development standpoint?

Hi, guys!!

I wanted to ask you, will the SSMS 2 have accurate astrodynamics like micro drag above 400,000 feet and in low earth orbit like where the ISS is? I know that at an altitude of 400,000 feet in SSM2007 the atmosphere magically stops where the atmosphere have no effect on the space shuttle at all. Now for the aerodynamics, I think the aerodynamics is accurate in SSM2007 when the space shuttle is in the atmosphere.

To prevent spamming the forums up, I have an SSM 2 question so I will just post it here.

I was reading this post from a few years back :
http://www.space-shuttle-mission.com/forum/index.php?topic=187.0

It mentions a networked type of multiplayer MCC for SSMS, I know there are probabaly more pressing things on the agenda for SSMS 2 but I was curious if there will be any type of support for add-on developers in SSMS2? Maybe we can help create new features and add-ons for the simulator.

One other thing, I was at KSC around the middle of 2010 and stopped by the gift shop and spotted this:

(http://img127.hotlinkimage.com/thumb/1001038133.jpeg) (http://img127.hotlinkimage.com/img.php?id=1001038133&q=)

and they were in the austronaut hall of fame gift shop too:

(http://img136.hotlinkimage.com/thumb/257168088.jpeg) (http://img136.hotlinkimage.com/img.php?id=257168088&q=)

glad to see it retail =)

Thanks!

Hi miranoff,

SSMS:TCE has been selling at the NASA shops (and other channels) since June-July last year :) Thanks for the field reporting: it's cool seeing the boxes at KSC.

As for the features set of SSMS2, follow the forum, our Twitter and Facebook page: once in a while, we make public select sneak peeks, hints about new features etc.

Stay tuned.

Just a small report. R&D is moving along and the results on the latest feature tha we're implementing are really amazing! Operating the Shuttle will never feel more realistic. Well, maybe in SSMS3 we'll be finding new ways to make it even MORE realistic, who knows?

I hope that when we're done with this feature, I'll be able to tease you with a few pics, like I did with the new, high resolution Earth and new scenery engine.

Meanwhile, keep on flying, and wishing NASA best of luck and success, as it wraps up the last chapter of the STS program.

I have grown hesitant over the years to jump and by a new product right at release.  I tend to wait a few weeks to let the kinks get worked out and read what others think of the game.

However, that will certainly not be the case here.  SSMS2 is a release day purchase for me certainly.

I hope these developers are still on schedule! :)  The new screenshots we've seen so far are amazing.  I hope we can also get some new audio/comm as well.  Maybe Charlie Hobaugh's voice for capcom :D And maybe the coveted shutdown procedures too ;)  I can imagine this new sim is gonna sell better than the first too.  Even some of my friends that aren't really into these things said they are gonna buy this!

...Com'on Admin ... any news for us ... remember that after 07 July we're gonna be sad since no more shuttle launches ... and after 12 days will be a disaster even to think we won't never see a landing and a wheel stop ... and all the rest :(

Hope SSMS2 will come extrememly soon,
Good speed STS Program , real and simulated too :)

Sounds good.

My two cents, no need for an update in the next week or so.  I will be too busy watching NASA TV every waking moment I can.  Want to follow STS-135 as closely as I can, since it will be quite some time until NASA is able to launch astronauts in one of its own vehicles.

But once Atlantis' wheels stop, an update would sure be a nice pick me up.  I am sure to be in one depressed mood when that happens.   :-[

Hi, Fenderf4i!

I think the SSMS 2 will only run on windows vista and windows 7. Since the new computers will no longer have windows XP installed, the chances are pretty slim the SSMS 2 will run on windows XP.

The fact that XP will not longer be pre-installed on newer PC's does not necessarily mean that SSM2 won't run on XP.

I think this question can only be answered by Admin.  :)

And as usual, it is too early to commit to anything at this point, but one thing is sure: we won't take specific steps to make it incompatible with Win XP. If eventually it becomes incompatible with Win XP, that will happen only if we have no choice.

Nice video! I have a question though: While the graphics have been updated, is there going to be updates on the technical side of the sim like procedures, systems simulation and orbital mechanics and overall level of difficulty, (I remember once there was talk about implementing some sort of master mode with no dumbing down of any of the systems/orbital dynamics, any word on that? Looking very good so far!

We'll touch everything that we can without pushing the release into the next century. As for the so-called "master mode", yes, there was a request/question, but no official commitment or otherwise was issued. The current features set is locked, but we cannot comment on all the features which made it through just yet. Following our forum, or Twitter and Facebook official announcements is the best way to know what happens with SSMS2.

We cannot make any promises for things which are not under our control. Sorry. We're not even insisting on the latest version of OpenGL - that's about all we can do to increase the chance that the occasional AMD driver bugs are killed for good.

I think that this issue should be taken to AMD which supposedly promises full OpenGL compatibility and support, bugs notwithstanding.

to be able to float from the Shuttle to the ISS through the docking port, and then explore the ISS as we slowly built it in orbit would be pure awesome.  I may have to get creative and construct a rig out of wood and bungie cords so I can get that "zero g feeling" and really crank up the immersion factor to 11.

There are no news I can make public yet, but all is GOOD :) We are still in Alpha (hint about when the sim is NOT coming) but moving ahead steadily.

A new Alpha will be released once we implemented the current major feature, and then we move to the next. Since all the new features are really huge, there is also a "huge" amount of work and testing. I am sure that when we release some sneak peeks covering what we've been doing for the last two months, you'll appreciate what I was talking about.

It will be worth the wait :)

Dear friends,

Just so you know, ho, ho, ho: we are in our virtual VAB, preparing for our own "Return to Flight #2" :). Here is the latest report:

1. The ISS you all know from SSMS1 is all but gone. The new SSMS2 ISS is growing. We are currently working our rear burners off on improving the ISS model and adding all sorts of cool stuff to it - including the interior :) That takes a lot of time, attention to detail, information gathering, modeling and energy.

2. Although we already released some sneak previews of the new, high resolution Earth engine, we still have a lot to add to it to make it even more realistic, so bear with us.

3. The 3D cockpit is fully operational and the very few bugs reported by the Alpha Team have been fixed. That very complex and critical part of SSMS2 is behind us already 99%.

4. Same goes for the new 3D MCC: we have no bugs reported on that section, but there is additional functionality that we plan to implement there, so that part of the project is still open.

Add to all the above the tons of new "things" that we have in store: more and surprising missions, new comunications, improved mathematical models, etc. and you'll become very realistic about the chances of seeing SSMS2 on the shelves this Christmas.

On the other hand, when SSMS2 does arrive, we don't want any of you to have the slightest feeling that you've wasted your hard-earned money on a pathetic sequel. We want us to be rightfully proud of SSMS2, just as we are of "SSMS1".

We also want you to be as engrossed by, supportive of, and enthusiastic about SSMS2 as you've been of SSMS1. We want SSMS2 to be - as the late Steve Jobs would have put it - "insanely great" :)

So for now, MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANNUKA and HAPPY NEW 2012 (in 10 days from now <g>)

As I said many times: releasing an unfinished or mediocre product is NOT an option for us. At release time it may still not be perfect, but at least it will be a complete and stable product, which honors the legacy of the Space Shuttle Program and the many people behind it - and of course, it is worthy of your $.

We don't want to fall into the marketing trap which is so characteristic today, and bind the sim release to a date instead of the product readiness. It may cost us more now, but in the long run, everybody will be much happier :)

Happy Holidays!

That makes sense. It is definitely better to wait for a more stable SSMS 2 than to release a buggy SSMS 2 and it is definitely well worth the wait!!! Please keep up the excellent work on making the SSMS 2 the best space shuttle simulator game on this planet!!

I for one will wait for the final product, no matter how long it takes.

SSMS 1 has set the bar.  The existing product (ver. 1) can be played over and over.  Each mission can take days to complete if you choose.

In my view, Version 2 will add the eye-candy and improved UI that we have all be craving.  Other than that, I would want nothing changed as Ver. 1 makes the grade for me in mission simulation.

And don't forget, the Shuttle is gone forever.  Anything we do in simulation is a recreation of history.  History takes time.  Be patient.  If you need a change of pace while waiting on SSMS 2, look at the "freeware" space simulationr product whose name cannot be said in these forums, but it does being with an O. Exactly the same only different, and in the end you'll still be wanting your Ver 2 of SSMS.

Happy Holidays and a Happiest New Year!

Same as for PMDG products : better have quality and take more time than buggy and less time.
All the very best to all the team, and a happy Xmas (or whatever hollyday you celebrate) to all !

Hi, DenisFerrari!

The developers are working on the major feature of the SSMS 2 right now which is a lot of work and it's why it's taking so long. Please be patient, it'll be done.

I was told SSMS2 was a year off towards the end of last year.

I'd personally wait for a finished product than have something released that wasn't ready and full of bugs.

Of course it would be nice to see the odd teaser. I'll expect the game when it's been released and no sooner.

Much respect for the talented devs and ground crew that make this the awesome sim that it is!!

Animation question: The thing that has bugged me about some space simulations  is how rocket/engine exhaust is depicted as these nice straight columns of gas...even in the upper atmosphere. Why don't animators accurately depict the expansion of exhaust gases at higher altitudes?
Title: Re: progress of SSMS 2
Post by: Spaceguy5 on February 25, 2012, 02:28:56 AM
I can't really speak for this one, but for Shuttle at least, the game was designed to use one texture for exhaust regardless of location. Also the reason they do it in movies is because "The audience would be too s****d to know the engine is firing if we don't add in an enormous fireball!" |=

It is normal that the forum activity would go down now that Exciting didn't released new mission since a while. I am sure that traffic will start again once SSMS2 will be close to release ! Don't worry about that !

IMHO, the most important thing is our reply time to solve a problem here with a new member (less than 12hours ! and some time mess than 1 hours depending the hour).

Another thing is that many users use the search function and find their answers and thus did not need to ask for help.

I remember when I was new here, and I was really pleased to see that the community still fully supported SSM2007 and were eager to help. I always hoped that I knew enough one day to return the favour.

One of these days i'll fire the sim back up again and finish off the last 4 missions (before SSMS2) but with a wedding to prep for this weekend my time for general relaxation stuff is short.

Keep up the good work to all those still active.

Small update ;)

We all know that we've been awfully silent lately. You must believe us that there have been many moments when we feel that we must barge in and show off the latest things we're working on, but after the initial burst of enthusiasm, we just have to calm down and shut up. In this sense, we took a page from Steve Jobs' attitude to pre-announcements, at least until we have something "complete" to show.

Work is still going on as usual, however the latest things we're working on are interrelated and belong to one big and important feature. We don't want to talk about it (yet) or to tease (believe me, this is hard, especially for me) at least until it's ready.

This is also the reason why we didn;t release any Alpha to the Alpha team for some time now. We cannot release a version or news until we have the new thing completed to a "playable" level.

This is all we have to announce for now. The new Space Shuttle will lift off yet again - at least on your PCs, and much sooner than its successor in real life will carry human crews to the ISS and beyond ;)

As for me, I am going through ssm-07 for the forth time and re-living all the missions. So far, no hang-ups at all (including a perfect sts-51a mission!) and I include my Flight Sim X in the process! I fly from Ellington in Houston to KSC in an f-18 with NASA livery(no t-38s in the sim) before every mission. Then, after a mission, I fly back to Houston from KSC on a Learjet. For me, this really gives the full package of flight sim glory! lol! After I wrap up all the flights, I will "retire" SSM-2007 and await the release of SSMS 2. I'm on orbit with STS-31 now so I'll probably wrap it all up in time. You guys really gave me my money's worth and then some. Keep on Space Truckin'! =)

The Milviz model has a really nice NASA livery and if you look really close, you'll find the name on the forward canopy is "Capt. Mark Kelly."  Wonderful detail.  The model by the way is very specific and flies very much like a real T-38, including its violent and often unrecoverable stall characteristics.

Title: Re: progress of SSMS 2

Well, it's all depending on where along the line the development is.
During initial development, you can never know what's going on.
take 3d clickable cockpit for example, Admin has stated in the past that it's on the menu. there are over 3000 clickable points spread around the shuttle pit. how much CPU overhead would be the detection system? or the added graphics, how much impact would that have on the Graphic card.

I can assure you, knowing how the dev team think, this would not be FSX type resource hog. it will run on normal current PC. (dual core something with a basic graphic card - I'm not sure what with onboard stuff) - If you would be able to run the thing on "Ultra-high" on this type of rig, only time would tell.

1. The ISS you all know from SSMS1 is all but gone. The new SSMS2 ISS is growing. We are currently working our rear burners off on improving the ISS model and adding all sorts of cool stuff to it - including the interior  That takes a lot of time, attention to detail, information gathering, modeling and energy.

We want SSMS2 to be - as the late Steve Jobs would have put it - "insanely great"

Vinny, don't get too excited. Because this sentence:
Add to all the above the tons of new "things" that we have in store: more and surprising missions, new comunications, improved mathematical models, etc. and you'll become very realistic about the chances of seeing SSMS2 on the shelves this Christmas.
is another way of saying "You're a dreamer if you really believe SSMS2 will be out this Christmas." ;)

Don't take me wrong, guys: I really don't mind waiting a bit longer for a new version, as long as it will offer more than just "eye candy", compared to the current version. E.g. I hope for additional realistic simulation of spacecraft systems, failure modes, aborts, etc. and maybe the old-style, pre-MEDS cockpit with analog instruments for the older missions.
And it would be really cool, if we could just use the real NASA checklists, at least for ascent, post insertion, deorbit, entry and shutdown procedures, maybe with some points, concerning systems which are not simulated, to be left out, but at least with the right sequence of events. Right now, in SSM07 the sequence of some procedures is quite different to the sequence in the original NASA checklists.

By christmas, the new version will be delayed for almost 3 years (it used to be called SSM2010 at first, remember?). So, what's another few months or even a year, if in the end we get a well made simulation, offering additional gameplay and more fun than the current one.
There have been too many examples of buggy software thrown on the market too fast, just to meet some deadline. I think, it is disrespectful of the paying customer and user. I am sure, nobody wants this experience with SSMS2: not the users, not the publisher and certainly not the developers.
I'd rather get a well developed product for my money, and I am sure that most people here think the same way.
So, developers: Please, take your time. SSMS2 will be ready when it's ready. Until then, SSM07 still offers a lot of fun.

BTW: After Virgin Games' "Shuttle", which I still consider the "mother" of realistic spaceflight simulators and a benchmark in its time, came out, I waited for over 15 years until a much improved and better new generation of Space Shuttle simulator came out in the form of SSM07. So, I don't mind waiting a few more months than expected to see the next generation, especially if the step is going to be almost as big as from "Shuttle" to SSM07.

So, I think we should just be a little bit patient and see what happens...

(But some news or info about the features of SSMS2 once in a while would be really nice anyway. :) )

Hi, Spacewalker!

You got the point there! That is very true, it is definitely better to release the new SSMS2 when it's free of bugs then releasing SSMS2 that have a lot of bugs!

I've been neglecting monitoring these forums far too long (babies becoming toddlers, advances in F-Sim Project <blank>, many other things, some good, some not so good). However it has been Interesting catching up on posts that are over 6 months old (or near as).

Just to tell you:

SSMS 2.0 is being delayed because an invasion of the G'Gugvuntts and Vl'hurgs races crashed into the development HDD, destroys it, then rebounds in the direction of a small dog. ;)

Mayans got it wrong, it's November 31th ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if this was low down on the list of priorities, or never implemented at all. Admin has said time and time again how the aim was not to focus on "disaster scenarios" or aborts, but on the simulation of successful missions.

Putting this in some form of context, in previous versions it was possible to prematurely arm the SRB sep and "sort of" do an abort. That "feature" was subsequently removed.
Title: Re: progress of SSMS 2
Post by: Cras on September 03, 2012, 06:47:58 AM
my 2 cents...if it didnt happen on the real flight, it shouldn't happen in SSM.   I like SSM because I am flying real flights with real payloads.

It just needs to be tightend up a bit, visuals upgraded, and I would love for the GPC to be more fully simulated.

In short, I cannot wait for SSMS 2.    I cannot wait to take the Shuttle back home to orbit!
Title: Re: progress of SSMS 2
Post by: MECO on September 03, 2012, 12:52:35 PM
well thats wierd. not every space flight went perfectly. there are bound to be glitches in every flight. like an engine out or something. or powerfailure in space.

Main engine failures/cut outs are already simulated in SSMS2007 along with some other minor faults displayed on the F7 panel, so long as this actually happened as part of the historical mission.

This is not the same as adding in a full on abort / failure to reach orbit scenario.

I haven't bothered reactivating 2007 since I assumed SSM2 was being released soon.

I'm sitting on the sidelines waiting to buy any new version - have been for a few years.

I kinda wish they would have released early and iterated. Even the 3D virtual cockpit would have justified the new release.

Anyway, hopefully it's not delayed to the point of becoming vaporware - that's all that matters.

I'm pretty sure it won't be out by the end of the year.

There is a delay in the development process, due to a non-technical issue that surprised all involved, one that cannot be resolved as quickly as we wish. But I'm afraid I cannot elaborate more then that at this point.

But I assure everybody, knowing the people involved, they will, to the best of their ability, make SSMS2 come to life.

Does this mean that the team cannot continue working on SSMS2 for now, until this issue is resolved?
If this is the case: What about a little update for SSM2007 in the meantime, with an additional mission or two?

Well, you can either accept what the moderators have said (and honestly I do not see why you wouldn't), and just wait for the guys to finish up SSM 2,

or here:  http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/downloads

Download that and you can get to work on coding your own Shuttle Sim.

I prefer to just let the guys work on SSM 2.    I still have plenty of flights to go on my current run through to tide me over.

Because we did not get any news for month, and because it has been said that SSM2 won't be released this year. The forum is dying slowly. This is a point at which customers usually start to worry about the future of a product. Especially because in the flight sim market there were products in the past which were never released or continued, although stuff was announced and shown for month and years. Without cards on the table (which is sadly usual) the customers can only become curious.

SSMS2 is not a vaporware, and with some luck it will be out sometime in 2013.

what ya mean the forum is dieing?

8 people replied in the "anybody here?" thread within one month. Not to mention most of the other parts of the forum, which don't include new posts for weeks and month. For a product and support forum it's not a good sign.

There is no feature packs anymore for more than 2 years, and not a single sign of any progress for one year now.

This place currently is kinda dead beside a few survivors and a few posts which only imply that there is still a progress :-\

Hi, DenisFerrari!

Please don't worry! The new SSMS 2 will be released eventually! Like what Christra said the development is very slow right now, and it is not the same as the development come to a halt! Please keep it cool! Thanks!

Sometimes something between heaven and earth occurs that forces somebody to delay a development.

I don't think it's a good strategy to stave off customers with mysterious explanations. Usually something like this means the end. I only hope that it will be different for this product, but which is not being continued for two years now.
Title: Re: progress of SSMS 2

That is not identical with a complete stop. It is a delay and nothing else.  :)

We sadly can't validate that claim since we did not get any preview for one year now.

The only obvious fact is that this product is on a complete stop for two and a half years now. The latest features pack was released in April 2010. And if we consider that version 2 initially was called SSM2010, SSM2 actually is three years late already without any news for one year.

Guys,

I think we've hammered this point home enough already. I think they get it... We're disappointed there's a delay to the release of SSMS2. For whatever reasons they don't feel they can categorically say what has happened to cause such a delay. If the dev team still says the project is a go then you can either choose to believe them or not. Personally? I believe them, but I don't think we'll see this any time soon.

When it is released, my hands will be going in my pockets quicker than you can say "we have main engine start" :)

I propose enough is enough and we leave this thread to some actual news :)

Forum is almost void, silent and empty...2 years with no updates and more than 1 year without amy news about SSMS2 is enough to much such a great forum to die.

A real pity.

I personally think that you're just "doomsaying" now. The activity on the forums and the "community" are what "we, the community" makes of it. Are there still people playing 2007? Apparently so. Are there people playing with valid questions that need some guidance? Yes, apparently so. As a veteran then, feel free to offer some insight otherwise how is anyone new to the sim supposed to pick up the skills?

I know I'd still be on the launch pad if it weren't for uri_ba's video tutorials and this forum - so lets keep that spirit alive :)

SSM2007 runs fine and I think there won't be any further updates just as other simulators after some time.
SSM2 still needs some work and the team is working on it.
The designation "SSM2010" was chosen because of the first intention to release it at the end of 2010. The features of SSM2 will go beyond SSM2010. So if MY calculations are right we are not even two years behind.

Other simulators are not SSM ;)

SSM is not a product which was "complete" at release, like MS FS for example. SSM was supposed to be a continuing project.

Remember:

Quote
Will you release more missions?: Yes, we have already released new missions as free add-ons and we plan to release more missions until we cover most, if not all the historical missions.

http://www.space-shuttle-mission.com/forum/index.php?topic=85.0

But that support has completely stopped two and a half years ago. They had to free up resources for SSM2 development (also stated in the forum). And my assumption is that they overreached themself with that new version i.e. the team seems to be small to get anything ready before it becomes vaporware.

SSM2 still needs some work and the team is working on it.

I really hope so.

Quote

Since it won't be released this year very obviously, we can already say that it's two years behind. And as such, whilst there are no news for a year, it sadly has become vaporware (for now). People outside of this forum also call it vaporware already. But this is not an offense. It's just disappointment, caused by those who work on SSM. Because there are no news. Only mysterious excuses like "something between heaven and earth".

If they would say what is going on, or not, and why not, we sure would excuse it and appreciate it. But there are sadly no cards on the table. The customers are left in the dark. We are lead to believe that a slow progress is going on without any single sign :(
Title: Re: progress of SSMS 2

Moonwalker,
I think you just cantered the point and I 100% agree.

No news, no cards on the table, no screenshots, no cues, NOTHING about SSMS2 since some worrying long time. And to me it just means : vapour, that is just nothing.

...how easy it would be for development team to just copy and paste some new screenshots ??! ... Or giving us some materials ??! Like copy of not definitive SSMS2 manual ??! Or just technical infos ??!...

Well, I think it would be a 10 minutes job for them and that it woul stimulate audience at its best...

Instead, nothing...or even less.

And result is just 50% or more of SSMS are just abandoning...

Still do not understand why all this silence.

Come on development team, just tell us which is the problem and we'll be he happy to understand and wait with a complete different feeling...instead of slightly abandon...

Title: Re: progress of SSMS 2

Yes, Denis, I also think it would be no problem to give us a sign of life.

But I want to make sure that I don't want to offend exciting simulations. They sure have their reasons why there is a very slow/no progress for some time. It's just not very nice to let us wait for month without any solid info.
Title: Re: progress of SSMS 2

Sure, no one of us wants to offend development team of such a great sim!
But sure, no senso letting us wait for months, then years...keeping thing void silence.

I don't know what can I add or explain more here. I know it's hard to wait but again and again, SSMS2 is not a vaporware/stopped or anything else, and with we hope that it will be out during 2013.

As we have said here before, the schedule has been changed considerably due to unforeseen events. Work is still going on, but a but slower.

I told you that I'll try to show you something of the next version that I'll got in few weeks.

I am personally not convinced any more SSMS2 is getting developed at good pace...but this is only my personal feeling.

Development team : Why, please just be sincere and come back with an answer , so why , I ask why, every time anyone here on forum asks about the 100% lack of updates of even bits of infos about SSMS2, all the times no one from dev team come back to us with a coherent and direct reply???????

Why every time it seems they just turn around our direct question about having at least some updated infos about new product incoming ?? Why no hints? Why no details? Shots? Why nothing?

Is that a so great secret to keep ?

Do you think total darkness and silence and lack of updates is keeping people around....instead of quickly let them disappear ??

I am personally more convinced by the second possibility...

Why this ??

Close everything you want if you prefer,  but this would only make SSMS project even more empty, silent and vapourware.

...my last 2 cents ;)

So there is no need to lock the thread. People are just disappointed by the lack of information.

It's not that ! We have a lot of new things "codded" but not "built" and we can't simply don't show you any thing for now.

When the new beta version will be here (I guess in about 1 month) then I'll be able to show you something.

We work at every stage of the program so it's why right now nothing is assembled and we can't show you any thing.

Now regarding the "lack of updates" We already told you that "why" so. The Admin of that forum is currently not available for "personal and unforeseen events" reasons and it's why I don't tell you the reason. Its personal you see ?

Please be patient.

Thank you, MECO!
It is a good example of individual people trying to trigger some rumours just to make it look worse than it is.
I can understand that there is disappointment. Saying it once is okay but pushing it up in every post is counterproductive and disturbing for the rest of the people here.

You have to accept that SSM2 so far is in a non public state of development. And it is developing. The team decides when to publish more information. There is nothing more to say about it.

The interior of the Space Station is the great upgrade that us outsiders on the Forum have been waiting to see now for about sixteen months, which is when the last Alpha is known to have been released (featuring the VC).  The team has been working a very important, time consuming and mind blowing new feature ever since.  But officially we have no clue of what it is.

Sorry guys but although I believe this site is not a scam I also believe we're all being mislead as to the progress of this sim.  Remember; a possible rollout by last Christmas.  Sorry, just my opinion and I've been following these threads for over 18 months.  I know your all saying 'we wait as long as it will be bug free' but honestly, this has gone on long enough.  By the time this thing gets release, we'll be flying Orion Sims after it has a few real flights.  Just my opinion.

I prefer to wait for a solid, comprehensive and bug free release myself.

I do get the anxiety of seeing previews, the promise of a new release, and wanting that new product, and how that anxiety can build when things go silent from the devs and target dates go missed.   I dont know how many of you are big time FSX fliers, but we went through a bit of a debacle with PMDG's NGX release, it was horrible.

I wont bother going into the details of that experience, but with that all being said, I say that anxiety is a far better thing than that utter annoyance and let down when the product finally does come out and it is almost unplayable and you then spend weeks if not months waiting for patch after patch after patch to get the thing right.

If the 2007 version is any indication, this development is in good hands.  The screenshots show they are bringing the game more into the modern fold, it will be expanded.  Yes the wait is hard, I know it.  I would love to see version 2 out just as much as the next guy.  But in the mean time, fly the missions in 2007 again.   And again if need be.  Or try the 'other' space sim out there to get your fix.

Be please, be patient.   The NGX experience is perfect for understanding why it is so important.

And besides, I would rather have the devs and testers and the like all busy on working on the game than having to moderate spats here.  Not saying there are spats here, but....things can get out of hand in such circumstances.

Having flown SSM 2007 since its release and hung around this forum since its inception, one fact of life around here is that Admin will speak when Admin has something to say.  As for not so many people being around, well there just isn't a great deal to talk about right now.  SSM 2007's last update came in April 2010.

why is there just a few members posting here? why is admin not saying any thing?

I am to understand that "Admin" maybe unfortunately involved in the unexpected setback in the development of the sim. I can only hope that Admin is well.

In addition, Ken's statement is incorrect in any case. In the absence of Admin, there have been responses by the likes of Uri_ba, Cthulhus, christra, and other members of the Alpha team who, after Admin are as "up to speed" with information as anyone can be without actually being a representative from Exciting Simulations.

well i would still like to knnow why theres a post block if you come back in less then a minute? even if i haven't posted for 1 day.

It's a pretty standard "anti-spam" feature. 60s between posts isnt really an unreasonable wait time in my opinion.

Not that it is really on topic to talk about it, but pretty much all the forums I deal with have such a time limit between posts.  And often for doing forum searches as well.  To prevent you from flooding the board and crashing the servers or just making things nasty.

Annoying?   Sometimes I have been annoyed by it.  Mostly with the search one, where I want to enter a new keyword and run the search but I have to sit there for a few seconds until it will go through....but if it means it helps keep the place up and running, then I am all for it.

VERY WELL SAID

The issue with the time limit between posts in this forum is that sometimes it keeps saying you can't post even if you haven't been logged in for days since your last post. And it does not disappear if you log in and off several times. You have to wait until one day or other it might work again. This is something I haven't seen in any other forum. It wouldn't be annoying if the time span really would be 60 seconds and not hours or days although it keeps saying 60 seconds.

What I have seen in other forums is that you can't even register because you get the message that you haven't entered the correct code while there wasn't any code displayed at all.

These are clearly issues of the anti spam functions.

why is there just a few members posting here?

Because there is no software support anymore for two and half years. And no news regarding SSM2 anymore for many month. So the need to visit this forum is declining for many users.

I visit this forum without any expectations for quite some time. I just log in to see my assumption of "no important news anyway" confirmed.

why is admin not saying any thing?

We don't know. And those who know it don't want to, or are not allowed to say why.

While it has to be said that the PMDG 737 NGX wasn't officially announced until 2010 if I remember correctly, and released in 2011. First unofficial news and speculations came up in 2009.

This is not comparable to SSM anyway. There is no support anymore for SSM for two and half years. And Exciting Simulations is a smaller company/group than PMDG, focused on one product only.

I am still here, guys. It's just that I decided some time ago that I will not be flying a Space Shuttle again until SSMS2 is released. I did the same thing with the Power & Glory mod for GTR2. I used P&G version 2.1 for some time, and then decided to wait for version 3. This was two years ago, and P&G3 was finally released a few weeks ago.

And do you know what? It's absolutely brilliant!

Let's hope the same thing happens with SSMS2 ;)

As you know the next Alpha version is on the way with new big things to test for us.

From that version, we'll be able to show you more things too because, that version will be a BIG STEP forward on the sim development.

When the new Alpha will come ? Not so long, again hard to say but that will not be so long. Why Admin don't come here? As we said here before, admin is currently not available for a personal and unforeseen reason. Its personal you see ?

And please, don't blame us, that will not HELP US. Just be patient a bit more.

And Moonwalker, the fullborne pessimist havent come up with a new doomsday theory yet?? Chocking  ;D.

Saying that SSM2007 is not supported is pure bulls***.
I got help with new keys and stuff just a couple of days ago.
So support is definitely still 100%.
But there will be no new missions and updates for SSM2007, that was stated a long time ago. I cant recall any software that got so many free updates as SSM2007 and Im pretty sure SSMS2 takes all the time.

If Moonwalker got any problems with this matter I suggest you sit tight and wait and stop nagging about it like a 6 year old child on his first car trip.
As far as I know we all paid money for the rights to use the SSM2007 software.
We didnt bought the whole company so Exciting Simulations doesnt have any obligations to tell us anything about SSMS2 progress if they dont want to.
If that is good or bad you can have different opinions about, but you cant keep posting all kinds of doomsday theories about things you have no clue about and expect not to be confrontated.

And thats what just has happened.  :-* :-* :-*

Moonwalker, the fullborne pessimist

Realist.

Saying that SSM2007 is not supported is pure bulls***.

Because you didn't read my posts properly.

I got help with new keys and stuff just a couple of days ago.
So support is definitely still 100%.

That's not software support which I was referring to, in terms of new updates and SSM2. That software support is at 0% since April 2010.

I cant recall any software that got so many free updates as SSM2007 and Im pretty sure SSMS2 takes all the time.

I know software which got many more updates. But that's not related to flight simulation software (but to games and operating systems).

We bought the rights to use the SSM2007 software. That's correct so far.

Furthermore, as part of the advertisement/buying inducement we were, and still are told, that most, if not all the historical missions will be released as free add-ons (see the FAQ's, it's still there). But that's not going to happen anymore for more than two and a half years due to development of SSM2, which is not going to be released in any foreseeable timeframe. It's in an alpha state from which there aren't any news for many month.

So, now it's up to you to call these facts doomsday.

Nice screenshots there!!
Looks like ISS is in for a real upgrade.

Moonwalker,
Exciting Simulation never promised to add "most, if not all missions".
They "planned" to do that. But as we all know plans can go terrible wrong.

And updates for a program is NOT software support, unless its made for a serious bug fixes.
If that was the case Microsoft must have the best support ever since bug fixes and other crap keeps poring in all the time.

And Im not saying you are wrong Moonwalker, but its start to get tiresome to read all your nagging over and over again.

My last statement, I'll rest my case in the matter.

Still Alpha because some elements are not done yet. The beta stage will start once all the elements will be assembled. I can't tell you when and what these elements are. We still have some nice ideas under the "feet".

This post with images is just to thanks everybody here for the support and waiting, yes, we know we are late but the project keep going on the good way.

Don't forget one thing : on the beginning stage of the SSMS2010 (and then SSMS2) ; about the virtual cockpit. We did not intended to make a 3D clickable virtual cockpit... But now you know, it is... We added lot of new features because it's fun to do it :)

But now, we have to stops our ideas and make a workable/stable SSMS2. The next ideas will be for SSMS3 :)

And here some more screens with the Shuttle, ISS and HiDef Earth !

My point being the checklists were kindly created by a member of the forum. I don't believe he is well and has not been heard from in some time.

I would doubt Exciting Simulations will be releasing "authentic" checklists and it will be up to "us" to create them for SSMS2

Hi, Cthulhus!

I think Pocci meant the SSMS 2 will be released on Christmas of 2013. Thanks!

               Cheers,

Who said xmas 2013? The only last "rumour" I was aware of was the initial xmas 2012 date before the unforseen circumstances involving Admin.

Unless Ive missed something none of the team that are lucky to have got their hands on Alpha have said anything about any further estimated dates... Unless Ive missed something.

If someone could point me towards the post?

I am really running out my waiting string here. Due to the 3 reinstall thing with 07 and the fact that I never could get a USB version working, (Im usually really good with that sort of thing. Loss of geek points!)  I have not been able to use the sim since last spring.

Now its really beginning to feel like Duke Nukem Forever/vaporware fiasco all over again.

kenralyon how about reading my entire post before you turn on the insult machine? If you did you would see that I can not reinstall my copy any more due to DRM that says three installs. I have installed the sim 3 times, and could not get a jump drive version to work. So I dont even have SSM07 to use anymore.

I was under the impression that the support team would only provide these services free of charge up to three times. Any subsequent requests may come with a small admin fee.

Have you contacted them to find out for definite?

I find it hard to believe that its three strikes and thats it... buy a new copy...  ???

It's not that the digital copy won't work, it's that due to the economic climate, Mr Beard is out of work and cannot afford to pay any fees to get the reactivation (and presumably can neither afford a new boxed copy).

I must say, this single thread has gone off topic more times than I can remember now.

Lets try and keep things relevant all :)

You're right. I think it's time to close it.
